As has been noted repeatedly and reiterated by Governor Jared Polis in his Tuesday press conference, this COVID-19 pandemic is not over. In Colorado cases are rising and Chaffee County is not immune.
On April 28, in an email to parents, Salida School Superintendent Blackburn released the following statement: “This morning we discovered 10 new positive COVID cases across four buildings. By day’s end, we will have quarantined many students. If you have not been contacted by the day’s end, then your child is not restricted by today’s outbreak. Your principal will keep you informed of any building program changes if needed.”

“We are so close and need to keep up the preventative efforts that have served as our foundation for success. Please remember:
- If you are symptomatic, stay home. Call our nurses and make a plan for reentry and testing.
- Wear masks.
- Maintain your distance.
- Wash your hands.
These practices keep us open for in-person programming and protect student activities like sports and prom. If at all possible, please get a vaccination, protect yourself and avoid quarantine orders,” Said Blackburn.
The schools are conducting antigen testing to get kids back to school as fast as possible. In addition, the county’s local public health has frequent PCR testing, which is more reliable, all throughout the week.
The timing of the new cases is inopportune given that the Salida High School Prom is this weekend.
Chaffee County Public Health offers COVID-19 testing from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays at the Chaffee County Fairgrounds. The type of COVID-19 test offered is a PCR molecular test, the most accurate and reliable COVID-19 test. Appointments must be scheduled before 9:30 a.m. on the day of your test.
