The 2nd Annual Kent Haruf Literary Celebration will take place Sept. 27-29 at the SteamPlant Event Centerin Salida.

Haruf, the author of Plainsong and Benediction, among other works, made his home in Salida until his death in 2014. His widow, Cathy Haruf, has been instrumental in organizing the celebration of Haruf’s literary heritage. This year’s panelists include Ritesh Batra, director of the 2017 Robert Redford/Jane Fonda film based on Haruf’s last published work, Our Souls at Night.

All proceeds raised go to fund the Kent Haruf scholarships. The scholarships are awarded to Chaffee and Fremont County high school students who have entered their creative writing in the fields of short stories, novel excerpt, novella and nonfiction.

Registration fees for the celebration are $150 per entry. However, thanks to the generosity of a local donor, local residents can attend for $100. Space is limited to 200 participants, and registration ends Sept. 15. For more information, or to register, visit the celebration’s website at www.honorkentharuf.org.
