On Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at approximately 5:39 a.m., an unidentified resident of Salida observed what was described as “two suspicious male subjects” loading lumber onto a trailer being pulled by a white full-size truck. While the citizen was observing the two men, they got into the vehicle and left the scene.

The reporting party called for a police response and began following the subjects at a safe distance. As officers with the Salida Police Department were responding, the truck left the city limits and traveled west to U.S. 285.

As Salida Police Officers converged on the area, the reporting caller observed a passenger in the vehicle fire multiple rounds from a handgun out the passenger side window. Salida Police Officers pursued the vehicle near U.S.285 and CR 140.

The pursuit traveled a short distance into the Eagle Moon Ranch subdivision where the vehicle crashed. It is believed both suspects fled on foot.

The Chaffee County Combined Tactical Team was activated and a large-scale search operation was launched by a joint team consisting of members of the Salida Police Department, Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado Department of Corrections, U.S. Bureau of Land Management, and Chaffee County Search and Rescue.

After several hours of searching the event was scaled back and as of the time of this posting the suspects remain at large and their identities have not been confirmed.
