Ski and snowboard enthusiasts across the Arkansas River Valley are rejoicing today, as Monarch Mountain opened for the season with a 24 inch base, and an additional two inches of new snow overnight.

While the official opening was 10:30 a.m. Dec. 11, long before that moment skiers and boarders were clomping through the snow, cheerfully waving at friends, herding kiddos, exchanging pleasantries in lift ticket lines, then beginning to line up to be first on the slopes the minute 10:30 a.m. sounded.

Lift tickets for today (Saturday) are available only at the ticket windows. Tickets for Sunday, Dec. 12 can be purchased online by 11:00 p.m. tonight, Dec. 11.

On Thursday, as the storm pounded the Sawatch Range and other parts of the state, Monarch CEO Randy Stroud took a few minutes with the county’s COVID Leadership Roundtable to say, “We’re moving as fast as we can. We’re getting ready, we’re trying to open as soon as we possibly can. We can’t wait to welcome our visitors back.”

He added ” It’s snowing! Let’s hope it keeps snowing!”
