A birthday party this weekend in Colorado Springs ended in tragedy when a gunman showed up. Seven adults were killed, including the shooter, who was apparently the boyfriend of one of the party attendees. Several children were in attendance. None of the children were hurt, and all are in the care of family members at this time.

According to Colorado Springs Police Lt. James Sokollik, the shooting happened just after midnight at the Canterbury Mobile Home Park in the 2800 block of Preakness Way.

“The tragic shooting in Colorado Springs is devastating, especially as many of us are spending the day celebrating the women in our lives who have made us the people we are today,” said Governor Jared Polis in a prepared statement. “Multiple lives were taken today by this terrible act of violence. Families torn apart, and at a birthday party no less. My deepest condolences and prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone else impacted by this tragedy.”

According to one of the party’s attendees, all of the victims were members of the same extended family, which had gathered to celebrate the birthdays of two adult family members.

The shooter, who has not been publicly identified, was the boyfriend of one of the women attending the party. Sokolik said that according to the family, he had not been at the event earlier, until showing up around midnight.

“He drove to the residence, walked inside, and began shooting people at the party before taking his own life,” said Sokolik in the news release.

The death toll makes this recent event among some of the more deadly Colorado mass shootings. It comes just seven weeks after a gunman killed 10 people who were employees, shoppers, and a police officer responding to the scene, at a King Soopers grocery store in Boulder.
