Angel of Shavano will cease to collect plastics numbered three, four, five, six or seven starting May 15.

“Due to the market collapse of these types of plastics we cannot collect and process them,” said Angel of Shavano owner Mickey Barry. “Unfortunately, this is happening across the country. The plastic markets have been hit extremely hard due to many factors especially the international ban of these types of plastics.”

Consumers can identify the designation of their plastic container by locating the numeral on the container itself. Typically, this number is found on the bottom of the item.

“Generally, the container will be a twist top bottle (soda, detergent and milk containers) or Clam Shells (produce containers such as strawberries),” said Barry.

Currently, number one and two plastics have a strong domestic market. Angel of Shavano will continue to collect number one and two plastics.

“We will continue to search for other ways to divert 3-7 plastics from the landfill,” pledged Barry. “Unfortunately, due to our location and the value of the materials, we cannot justify the collection of 3-7 plastics.”

Recently, China stopped accepting plastic recyclables from other countries. This has worldwide implications, and Central Colorado is no exception.

Angel of Shavano will continue to collect these items from Chaffee County drop sites:

Cardboard: corrugated boxes, cereal/soda boxes, brown paper and bags, egg cartons, and cartons (juice boxes, milk cartons)

Paper: office paper, junk mail, folders, magazines, shredded paper (in a bag).

Newspaper: newspaper inserts, phone books, coupons, white packing paper

Glass: bottles and jars only colored (brown, green and blue), clear

Tin/Aluminum: cans, clean aluminum foil, clean aluminum pans, no scrap metal

Plastic Containers 1-2: plastic bottles w/twist tops, clam shells
