It’s National Fire Prevention Week and this year the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) is teaming up with the Durango Fire Protection District (DFPD) to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Fire won’t wait, plan your escape” with a live fire burn demonstrations and fire muster.
The event runs from 9:00 a.m.to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 8, 2021, at 142 Sheppard Dr. in Durango. It will include live firefighting demonstrations, kids’ educational activities, booths, food and ice cream.
“It’s important for everyone to plan and practice a home fire escape. Everyone needs to be prepared in advance so that they know what to do when the smoke alarm sounds. Given that every home is different, every home fire escape plan will also be different,” said DFPC Fire & Life Safety Section Chief Chris Brunette. “Have a plan for everyone in the home. Children, older adults, and people with disabilities may need assistance to wake up and get out. Make sure that someone will help them!”
“Having a home fire escape plan and practicing it is important for all members of a family,” said Durango Fire Protection District Fire Chief Hal Doughty, who invites readers to see the demonstrations at their new training tower and their fire-fighting helicopter. “We also need to extend the planning and practicing to evacuating from a wildfire.”
