The sixth annual Tails on the Trail 5k Race is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 20. The race will begin on Hillside Drive across the tracks from the F Street bridge, head up Tenderfoot Hill for a 285-foot elevation gain and loss, and end at the SteamPlant. Anyone can participate; dogs are optional.

The race was inspired by Loyal Duke, an American Water Spaniel who served as Salida’s ambassador for 13 years. Duke greeted trains at the depot, visited around town, and accompanied visitors up Tenderfoot.

“Tails on the Trail is a great way for our community to come together while supporting the lifesaving work of Ark-Valley Humane Society (AVHS) and the great community efforts of the Salida Dog Club,” said AVHS Executive Director Amber van Leuken. Proceeds will benefit these two organizations to help animals in our community.

Pre-registration is open through May 17. Entrance fees are $40 for adults, $30 for youth, and free for children five and under. Participants can also sign up between 10:00 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. on race day at the F Street Parking lot near the caboose site if the pre-registration window is missed. Registration fees are an additional $10 on the day of the race. Registration will move to the Salida SteamPlant if it rains.

Anyone interested in participating without needing to walk or run can purchase after-party-only tickets for the pre-registration price of $25 or $35 on race day.

Canine participants are limited to two dogs per registered adult. Dogs must be friendly and vaccinated and remain leashed throughout the race. Dogs are not allowed indoors at the SteamPlant.

Participants should expect some changes from previous years. The course has been moved to Tenderfoot Hill and an after-party is scheduled at the Salida SteamPlant. The post-race brunch is provided by Kalamatapit Catering. The after-party will include live music and fundraising games.
