Each summer, for the past couple of years, Ark Valley Voice has celebrated “Christmas in July” as our summer fundraising appeal, which the community has generously supported to assure that independent fact-based journalism is alive and well in this valley. This year we’ve switched it up a bit and announced that it’s “Christmas in August!”

We know. It’s not quite as catchy. But we purposely delayed this all-important donation campaign to be able to announce Ark Valley Voice’s new nonprofit 501(c)(3) status earlier this week.  This makes every donation to AVV 100 percent tax-deductible. We have set a goal of raising $20,000 to support the operation of our hardworking newsroom over the coming season.

We have set an ambitious goal for this fundraising appeal because frankly– we need it. As Ark Valley Voice has grown, it has sought advertising, won some small grants and received donations from generous individuals who share a belief in our mission.

Since our inception, Ark Valley Voice (AVV) has had that one simple mission; to give truth a voice.

Every dollar of our goal supports our local journalists and nothing else.

As a member of the Colorado Press Association, and now as a full member of the Institute for Nonprofit News, our journalism ethics meet a high standard for responsible reporting; asking tough questions,  supporting the community, investigating inequities, and holding government to account.

AVV has attracted a growing audience of more than 27,000 readers that reflects the demographics of our county, our state, and our nation. In fact, AVV readers skew much younger than traditional print audiences and match our state demographics. Two-thirds of our readers are reading us on their mobile phones. They appear to be inquiring and curious; asking us questions, wanting to know more, and demanding transparency and truth from our leaders at every level of government.

We’re excited by the level of grassroots support already emerging — this represents not so much deep pockets, as everyday readers, and digital-news supporters willing to chip in $10 or $15 a month to support publishing stories that might otherwise go untold. We hope you’ll join us and donate to help us reach our goal.

Our humble thanks to our reader-partners, without whom, the mission would not be possible.
