U.S. Senator Michael Bennet

Colorado Senator Michael Bennet has joined the entire Democratic Caucus in a letter to President Trump opposing Bureau of Land Management Director nominee William Perry Pendley. Pendley has been acting director and President Donald Trump has now nominated him for the permanent position.

Bennet has been outspoken about his concerns with Pendley and the government’s widespread sale of public lands that he is overseeing.

In September of last year, Bennett led 11 of his colleagues in calling for the termination of Pendley’s position of Acting Director of the BLM showing his true commitment to our public land and water.

Bennet and the Senators wrote, “We write to express opposition to Mr. Pendley’s nomination to the position of Director of the Bureau of Land Management. Mr. Pendley’s public record, including his advocacy for reducing public lands and access to them, routine attempts to undermine tribes, and climate change denial makes him unfit for the position.”

Their letter went on to conclude, “The Bureau of Land Management is responsible for stewarding vast expanses of public lands. It needs a leader who reflects the values of the American people and their support for access to public lands. Mr. Pendley’s record lays bare his decades of opposition to those values.”

Bennet and his colleagues continued, “we are confident that the nomination process will demonstrate the need for a different nominee. We urge you to identify a new, qualified candidate for this critical position – one who supports public lands and the mission of the Bureau of Land Management.”
