The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Royal Gorge Field Office is seeking public input on a draft environmental assessment (EA) for a proposed non-motorized trail near Cañon City to expand trails available for hikers and cyclists. The release of the draft EA opens a 15-day public comment period, which ends on Nov. 12.

The 2.4-mile trail would connect Tunnel Drive Trail and Riverwalk Trail to the Royal Gorge Park Trail System, near the communication towers on Fremont Peak. It was identified in the Eastern Fremont County Trails, Open Space & River Corridor Master Plan and proposed by Cañon City in April 2015.

Royal Gorge Field Office Manager Keith Berger said in a press release from BLM said, “This trail would increase access to two local trail systems and improve the outdoor recreation opportunities in the area.”

He continued, “We want to hear from the community about why the proposed trail is important, as well as any potential concerns.”

Comments must be submitted through the ePlanning site or by mail to the Royal Gorge Field Office, Attn: Tunnel Drive to Fremont Peak Trail, 3028 E. Main Street, Cañon City, CO 81212.

Those who wish to comment should be aware, before including your address, phone number, e-mail address, or any other personal identifying information in your submitted comments, that your entire comment, including personally identifying information, may be made publicly available at any time. While individuals may request BLM to withhold personal identifying information from public view, the BLM says that it cannot guarantee it will be able to do so.

The draft EA, maps, and information are available for review on the BLM ePlanning site.
