The Colorado Housing and Finance Authority (CHFA) announced its Round One 2023 Direct Effect award recipients. The Boys and Girls Club of Chaffee County (BGCCC) received $10,000 as the only recipient in this area.

Correction: Achieve, Inc, located in Buena Vista, was also a recipient of of the Direct Effect awards. They received $15,000.

The Direct Effect Awards recognize Colorado nonprofits whose missions align with CHFA’s work to strengthen Colorado by investing in affordable housing and community development. CHFA is donating $942,060 to eighty-five organizations across Colorado during Round One. Applications for Round Two open on September 1 and close on September 29. More information about applications and eligibility is available online.

Boys and Girls Club Chaffee County

The Boys and Girls Club of Chaffee County’s website states, “Our mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.” During the summer, they opened their doors for fifty-six days for over four hundred kids. The Buena Vista and Salida clubs offered new programs alongside classic summertime activities, such as water day, field trips, and rocketry.

Longfellow Elementary hosted summer school in June and July at the Salida Club. Students worked on reading and writing skills through activities with the help of teachers from the school.

Buena Vista and Salida Club kids came together for water day, which featured a slip n’ slide, water slide, and reusable water balloons. The water day was a welcome break from the summer heat for the kids.

Both clubs also focused on science this summer, participating in rocketry with Mr. Justis. One day was spent engineering and constructing rockets. The next day showcased their hard work with the rocket launch; an opportunity that the club thanked Justis and the volunteers that deliver programs like these for area youth.

Middle school club member Jimmy C. spent his summer producing and directing Pirates! The Musical, at the Salida Club. Jimmy and fellow middle schoolers Paityn and Kayla, obtained the rights to the musical, cast the play, led rehearsals, and designed costumes and stage props, all on their own. Their efforts culminated in two performances on August 9 and 10 in the Club’s Maddie Pendon Performance Room.

Programs like these are the reason why the Chaffee County Boys and Girls Club received the CHFA award, which will enable them to continue educating and caring for community youth.

The Club’s Great Futures Gala is also on the horizon. The Gala is set for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 27 at the Mt. Princeton Hot Springs Resort Pavilion. The event will feature a dinner, auction, updates about the Boys and Girls Clubs, a speech from the Youth of the Year (Irene Alvarez), and live entertainment from comedian John Novosad.

Tickets are available online now for the Great Futures Gala. General admission is $50.
