Expect traffic into and through Chaffee County as this holiday weekend begins to perhaps be worse than first anticipated due to the unexpected closure of Interstate 70 (I-70) through Glenwood Canyon.
I-70 is closed eastbound at the 116 main Glenwood Springs exit after a semi-trailer truck heading westbound on Interstate 70 reportedly jumped the median, around noon on Friday onto the eastbound lane near the Hanging Lake exit and caught fire.
As reported in the Vail Daily, the incident is near the Hanging Lake exit nine miles east of Glenwood, according to the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office. I-70 is also closed in the westbound direction at mile marker 133 near Dotsero due to the incident. The sheriff’s office is warning motorists to use caution and expect delays.
The westbound lane is higher than the eastbound lane, but depending upon the damage and the time to extricate the semi-truck, there is no estimated time of the reopening of the interstate.
