The Buena Vista Board of Education is set to meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, August 28 at 113 North Court Street for their regular meeting. No action will be taken at Monday’s meeting, but the Board will consider directing Superintendent Lisa Yates to present revisions to policy to include a biliteracy certification for action at a later meeting.
Spanish Teacher Angelee March presented a proposal about an opportunity for Buena Vista High School (BVHS) students to receive a Biliteracy Certification at graduation. Colorado Senate Bill 17-123 authorizes the Local Educational Agency (LEA) to grant a Seal of Biliteracy for high school diplomas to graduating students with proficiency or higher in both English and one or more world languages.
As required by the Colorado Department of Education (CDE), students must demonstrate proficiency in English and proficiency in another language. According to the information in the board packet, BVHS students would also be required to present at least half of their senior capstone in a language other than English. The minimum state requirements are available online.
The agenda includes regular communications reports. The board is set to hear reports from Yates regarding academic trends and the biliteracy certificate. Board reports on the agenda include Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES,) District Accountability Committee (DAC), the Elementary/Preschool Campus Committee, and board member correspondence.
The consent agenda for Monday’s meeting includes the approval of contracts, notification of employment agreements, notification of resignation or retirement, evaluations discussed at the previous meeting, approval of new benchmarks as discussed at the previous meeting for the 2023-24 school year, and the quarterly financial report.
Nothing is listed under Discussion and Action or Board Evaluation and Unfinished Business. The Board may move into executive session.
The full board agenda with packet link is available online. The next regular meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. Monday, September 11.
