This Saturday, December 1st, is the annual Buena Vista Christmas Opening Weekend. Buena Vista’s Town Administrator Phil Puckett, is excited for this year’s Christmas opening weekend.
“It is definitely a great event. The Chamber is the event coordinator, and it feels very local. In terms of the participation and the event in general.” Puckett said. “It’s exciting because it continues to grow.
The Christmas Opening has an entire day packed with events for the community to enjoy, led by the Chamber of Commerce. The range of events for those participating in the day is extensive; from whipping up your favorite holiday chili and entering it into the Chili Cook-off, to joining in Christmas caroling throughout town. Community artisans can enter their work into the Buena Vista art show and sale in The Loft, or participate in the local Craft Fair. Many retail stores downtown will be offering holiday sales as well. The Buena Vista high school and middle school bands will be performing from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm at the Re/Max Annex (429 E. Main St.).
Puckett said that last year the Polar Plunge was a new event addition. It is scheduled to take place from 3:00 to 4:00p.m. on Saturday. But he added with a laugh, “I am not participating in that, but kudos to those who do!”
The community can also take advantage of the Mt. Princeton Hot Springs punch pass sale. To purchase a pass for the popular hot springs location, visit the WEST entrance of the Community center (715 E. Main St.) The community center will be selling one dollar playing cards for the Chocolate Walk, and Christmas tree permits. The Community Center will also be hosting Santa Clause from the hours of 1:00pm until 5:00pm. A visit with Santa includes a free photograph!
Many may also consider donating toys to the Toys for Tots collection located at the Surf Hotel (1012 Front Loop). Donations will be accepted from 10:00 am until 5:00pm. Also on South Main – the Lighting of the South Main Christmas tree at 5:00pm, also located at the Surf Hotel.
Saturday evening, following the Christmas tree lighting, will feature the Parade of lights. This annual parade is open to all community members. The Buena Vista Chamber of Commerce encourages all to participate, and the parade is open to vehicles, floats, walking, and even equine. The only requirement is to decorate with lights whatever form of transportation you are using. The parade will start at 5pm, with lineup starting at 4:30pm on South Main. The parade will make its way from South Main to East Main and conclude near the railroad.
The Buena Vista Chamber of Commerce also invites anyone interested to attend the Business After Hours event on December 13th. This event is for business owners or other parties to gather, socialize, and network with their peers. This event will take place at Collegiate Peaks Bank, and will include a light fare and adult beverages. The cost to attend is $7. To request an invitation, call the Chamber of Commerce.
Buena Vista hosts a variety of town-wide events throughout the year meant to bring members of the community together and promote the value of relationships and togetherness among the residents of Buena Vista. The Christmas Opening Weekend is another opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate the holiday season.
“All of our events are great. They help our economy, expand what we have to offer as a town, and they enhance the quality of life for the people that live here.” Puckett said. “Specific to the BV strong dinner and the Christmas Opening…they are very meaningful and [they] give people a sense of that community feeling that is very important here. These are events that will continue on because they are tradition.”
