The Colorado Wilderness Conference is coming back to Buena Vista. Starting Friday, May 10, and running through Sunday, May 12, the conference will feature speakers from the United States Forest Service and various wilderness and recreation clubs around Colorado.

“We are excited to bring the Wilderness Conference back to Buena Vista so that local advocates can share ideas and strategies with leaders around the state,” said Salida-based, Conservation Director for the Colorado Mountain Club Julie Mach. The Colorado Mountain Club is hosting of the event. “We had about 100 people attend when we hosted in BV in 2016 and it’s a great opportunity to showcase our valley and bring some visitors to the area.”

The conference will be held at the Buena Vista Community Center, 715 E. Main St. There is a $45 fee for conference attendees and the public can attend.

Per the Colorado Mountain Club’s website, the event will provide opportunities to “learn and discuss Colorado public lands issues, brainstorm advocacy and grassroots strategies, and celebrate past successes while planning for future conservation efforts through speakers, presentations, panels, breakout sessions and place-based hikes.”

Eddyline Brewing and Kalamata Pit Catering will be providing food and beverages for conference attendees.

The Conference will highlight the Colorado Outdoor Recreation Economy (CORE) Act. CORE designates lands for hiking, biking, skiing, climbing and other activities while protecting wildlife habitat.

With Chaffee County’s recent push towards sustainable growth and conservation through Chaffee Common Ground and Recreation in Balance, this topic is particularly relevant.

The Conference will also be addressing conservation and stewardship topics. Once again, these topics relate directly to the current undertakings in Chaffee County.

On Sunday, May 12 conference attendees will be able to take ‘field trip’ hikes to Browns Canyon National Monument, and Camp Hale/Core Act areas.
