Update: Repairs have been completed on the pipeline. “We ask residents to please leave their porch light on as an indication to our technicians that they can safely work to restore gas service tonight,” said a release at 5:15 p.m on Feb. 10.

Atmos Energy was responding Wednesday, Feb. 10 to a natural gas outage that affected the north and west side of Buena Vista along County Road 361 and North Highway 24.

Technicians were working Wednesday, Feb. 10, to restore natural gas service to 200 customers in Buena Vista.

The situation was caused when a third-party construction crew damaged a transmission line late Tuesday. The supplier’s pipeline feeds natural gas to the Atmos Energy distribution system serving Buena Vista. While it was originally estimated that 200 customers were affected, Atmos determined Wednesday that the number was below 100.

By 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, technicians had been able to turn off the affected gas meters and had provided customers with information on the process, which entails door-to-door relighting of gas appliances.

“We are hopeful that our supplier will complete repairs to its transmission pipeline by the early evening so we may begin the restoration process,” said a mid-day release from Atmos. “We’ve also made sure that local officials are aware of the updates that become available.”

“The safety of our customers, employees, and our system is our number one priority. Natural gas outages are extremely rare, and this one was out of our control,” said Dan Higgins, Atmos Energy Operations Supervisor. “Still, it’s an inconvenience to our customers and we want to thank them for their patience.”

Atmos serves 1,400 communities in eight states and categorizes such outages as rare.

Customers are reminded that workers entering homes will be following COVID-19 protection guidelines as per the CDC, and Atmos recommends that residents follow the same precautions, including social distancing.
