During their regular July 7 meeting, Buena Vista Trustees will discuss whether to allow the sale of recreational marijuana. Recreational marijuana sales are legal in the state of Colorado. They provide significant income to the governmental entities of the counties which allow its sale.
As a part of that discussion, trustees will consider whether to create and adopt an ordinance approving the use (which is within their legal authority to do), or hold an election allowing residents to vote on the issue.
If they decide to adopt an ordinance this year, the trustees could still consider putting before the voters an additional Special Sales Tax imposed on each sales transaction of recreational marijuana.
Given the current economic situation created by the coronavirus known as COVID-19, and the potential for a reduced sales tax base to cover the operation of the town government, this could represent additional sales taxes that at the moment are going to other parts of Chaffee County and out-of-county.
Ascend Cannabis at 204 W. Main St., is Buena Vista’s only medical marijuana store.
Among other agenda items, trustees will consider accepting the annexation of the land parcels on which the Sangre de Cristo Electric Association Headquarters are located. The annexation parcels include Parcel A, Parcel B and the Tri-State Substation.
The annexation process has several steps. If the trustees accept the annexation, they must still establish an annexation and zoning public hearing date. Should the Board of Trustees approve the adoption of Resolution No. 39, Series 2020, it would set the date of public hearing as Aug. 25, 2020.
This regular meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the Buena Vista Community Center, Pinon Room – 715 East Main Street, Buena Vista, Colorado
