With the 2020 theme of “Surviving and Thriving in All the Seasons,” Buena Vista High School is planning its homecoming parade for 1:00 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 14 down Railroad Street.

Superintendent Lisa Yates said that it was important for the school to have a version of homecoming, “to help the kids maintain some of those traditions… We have much to learn from the strong and resilient minds of our youth.”

The re-imagined event for students and alumni is a scaled-back version of previous years’ efforts. Due to COVID-19, there’s no dance, bonfire, or major sports event. The sport of football has been rescheduled for spring 2021.

Spectators are asked to socially distance along the parade route.

Homecoming was rescheduled from the last weekend in October, accommodating some students who had been in quarantine. The school has been able to have Spirit Week, a scavenger hunt, and LowNet competitions, and is planning on PowderPuff games in conjunction with homecoming.

As well, students were able to do their traditional service projects that go along with homecoming: highway and park cleanups, building fences at the sand volleyball courts, building crafts and reading via Zoom with elementary students, and more.

From 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. after the parade, the district will offer tours of the newly completed second phase of the middle school and high school building project, which contains the athletic commons, performing arts area, and art rooms.

Another feature of the celebration will be the unveiled of  time capsules from the old building. The school will have items that will go into the new capsule on display.
