The Board of County Commissioner’s (BOCC) agenda beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 21 will be held at the Buena Vista School District board room, 113 N Court St., Buena Vista. Among agenda items, Chaffee County Emergency Manager Phil Graham will present the Colorado Division of Fire Protection and Control’s Annual Operating Plan to the BOCC for approval.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will give an update on current and future projects within Chaffee County at 11 a.m. during the BOCC meeting. The presentation will highlight the progress on Cottonwood Pass, construction of passing lanes on U.S. 50 between Salida and Howard, and the intersections of U.S. 50 and U.S. 285 near Poncha Springs.

Construction on Cottonwood Pass began two years ago on the west side of the pass. Crews began working on the east side, nearest Buena Vista, last spring. It is expected that the opening of Cottonwood Pass will be delayed following the significant snow accumulation last winter and this spring.

The county commissioners will also finalize usage plans surrounding the purchase of an industrial grinder for the county landfill. Though expensive, a grinder will allow the landfill to reduce materials to smaller sizes, thus maximizing landfill space and extending the life of the landfill location.
