The snowstorm that hit a large section of the Central Colorado Rockies has a twin apparently headed this way.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is warning of dangerous conditions for drivers continuing throughout tonight and into Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night. The weather service is forecasting an 80 percent chance of snow in Buena Vista throughout tomorrow, possibly into Wednesday.

Spring snowstorms bring not just dangerous driving conditions, but the threat of avalanches as more moisture falls on top of already-unstable layers of old snow.

If travel is unavoidable, CDOT is asking drivers to take time before more snow falls to ensure your vehicle is properly equipped.  Their tips:

  • Make sure your tires are up to the task with a minimum tread depth of 3/16″
  • Check your windshield wipers, replace them if needed, and fill your washer fluid.
  • Check your battery and ensure all your vehicle’s systems are working properly.
  • AWD or 4×4 vehicles would be best, also consider including tire chains or other alternative traction devices.
  • Commercial vehicles should be ready with chains.

If you must go out, CDOT say that taking precautions before you become stranded could keep you safe. They recommend bringing extra clothing, snow boots, or blankets in addition to some food and water. To ensure you can get help on its way to you, carry a portable power bank or charger.

In an emergency, says CDOT, you can call 9-1-1 from anywhere in the state. Their best advice?  Do everything you can to stay at home and stay off the roads. If you must drive, be conscious of changing conditions, take it slow, watch for plows (that might be operating in the reverse direction) keep your distance, and stay alert for first responders working in these conditions or stranded motorists.
