After a two-year hiatus, Earth Day will be celebrated once again in Salida on Friday, April 22 as the signature event brought back by the Central Colorado Climate Coalition (CCCC).

The event will feature the popular Parade of the Species through downtown to Riverside Park, along with live music, community partner booths, speakers, displays. and food and refreshments. All will be featured from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Members of the public who wish to take part in the parade, in the costume of a favorite creature (or not), should gather by 11:30 a.m. at Alpine Park. Marching will begin at 12:00 noon, moving down F Street to Riverside Park. There will be signs about endangered species to share with marchers, along with yellow sunflower umbrellas to signify support for the people of Ukraine.

Prior to the parade, there will be a Riverside Park clean-up for volunteers to remove accumulated trash and debris, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

Participants in the parade/event are urged to dress for all types of weather and bring:

  • A refillable bottle of water.
  • Good walking/frolicking shoes.
  • Your costume, float, banner, sign, or musical instrument
  • Chairs and cameras for any friends or family who just want to watch.

While the entertainment lineup was still being put together at press time, plans include the Salida Circus, musical groups, informational booths, demonstrations and activities for children.

People who would like help or make suggestions for a species costume should contact Ken Brandon at Box ‘O Bubbles at at 719-539-7443.

In an effort to encourage reusable water bottle use, there will be a public water station, provided by the City of Salida at the park, in cooperation with Unbottle and Protect Chaffee County Water.

“We really wanted this Earth Day celebration to give participants and our organization a chance to walk their talk,” says Angie Thompson, community organizer for the Climate Coalition. “We are excited to offer two different opportunities for community service, a zero waste trash set up, compostable cups, and a chance for local nonprofits and “green” businesses to do their important public outreach work.”

The Central Colorado Climate Coalition is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and the annual Earth Day Celebration is a service to the community. The group is required to pay for rental of city facilities and parade support, taking care of trash and recycling, and staffing the event.
