The 2020 election might be two weeks from today on Nov. 3, but the voters aren’t waiting.

Ballot returns in Chaffee County are matching the national early voting trend, coming in at historic rates. For whatever reason, the trend began almost the minute Colorado mail ballots began to arrive. Ballot returns began early Friday morning and continued through the weekend.

“Today felt like Election Day.  1,700 mail ballots is what we usually see on Election Day,” said Chaffee Clerk and Recorder Lori Mitchell on Monday night. “It was awesome.”

The heavy early returns in Chaffee County are in line with what is happening nationally; more than 30 million ballots have already been returned in states with early voting; a 300 percent increase over previous elections.

“We had 1,680 mail ballots received today for a total of 3,707,” said Mitchell in a Monday night voting report to the media. “We had 13 vote in person today for a total of 3,720. That means 25 percent [of Chaffee registered voters]  have voted.”
