The latest cases counts for the COVID-19 virus locally finds 47 infections over the past week, 79 for the past two weeks, including eight local Department of Corrections staff members.

The county total since the start of the pandemic is now at 707, according to the public health report, not counting more than 100 out-of-county cases recorded. A total of 23 virus-involved deaths have been reported, the latest a 64-year-old woman from the south end of the county.

There were 20 cases reported on Jan. 2, the third highest daily count since numbers have been tracked, behind 30 cases recorded on Nov. 28, and 24 infections detected on Dec. 4. The positivity rate remains above 5.5 percent

Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center is currently operating at 48 percent of capacity with one COVID-19 patient being treated there.

The Buena Vista Correctional Complex has had more than 500 cases among inmates since the pandemic started, with 68 active cases listed now. One inmate there has died from suspected COVID-19, and at least ten staff members have tested positive since Dec. 1.

Some of the statewide numbers may reflect what health officials warned about; increased infections due to holiday gathering and events.

To date, more than 341,000 cases have been detected in Colorado with 5,102 deaths among those infected, more than 3,900 directly caused by COVID-19. More than 19,700 people have been hospitalized. More than 3,000 infections were reported Jan. 7, an increase of more than a thousand. The state seven-day infection positivity rate was down slightly at just over eight percent.
