In response to Colorado Governor Polis’ Safer at Home Executive Order encouraging residents to wear non-medical cloth face coverings when leaving the home for business and while at work, Chaffee County Public Health and Chaffee County Emergency Management have secured around 1,500 masks to make available to the public for free.

Masks have come from Oveja Negra, Merry Mask Makers of Colorado Springs, the Colorado Hospital Association, the Salida Community Mask Project, the Buena Vista Community Mask Project, and other local sewers.

“If two people who interact with each other each wear a face mask, the risk of transmitting COVID-19 is extremely low,” said Chaffee County Public Health Nurse Emily Anderson. “Many people who have COVID-19 are asymptomatic, or have very minor symptoms, and could easily transmit the disease to someone who may have a much worse reaction. Masks are a reality for all of us during this reopening phase and everyone needs to have one.”

Chaffee County Public Health staff will be outfitted in protective wear to distribute to community members in their vehicles, or walk-up. Donations are accepted, and there is a limit of 1 mask per person in the vehicle.
