The COVID-19 numbers for Chaffee County are getting worse.

The latest count posted by Chaffee County Public Health (CCPH) shows a half-dozen new cases on Oct. 20, bringing the two-week total to 39 and cases for the month to 47.

Department of Corrections (DOC) officials are testing and re-testing inmates and staff at the Buena Vista Correctional Complex in the wake of an outbreak of COVID-19 that has infected staff members.

There was no information immediately available on whether any inmates of the two institutions there were infected, including a medium security prison and a minimum security facility housing inmates soon to be released.

DOC Public Information Officer Annie Skinner said Monday that a total of 15 staff members had tested positive at that point, nine of whom are Chaffee County residents.

Skinner stated all inmates had been tested Monday, Oct. 19, and would be tested again on Friday, Oct. 23. She said staff was tested last week and would also be re-tested this week.

“The outcome of the testing will determine the next steps,” she remarked.

The county two-week positivity rates has gone from 1.72 percent at the beginning of the month to 4.01 percent with the latest cases.

Governor Jared Polis Tuesday addressed continuing measures across the state to try to curtail the upward trend in cases and hospitalizations, which have risen to levels nearly as high as last spring.

Currently the positivity rate in the state is at 6.2 percent and the number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients stands at 417.
