This summer, as Chaffee County has been filled with tourists here to enjoy the great outdoors, some county volunteers have been busy collecting data about visitor campsite habits. The data has an important and long-term use.

Chaffee Rec Adopters Blair McBride left, and Selma Kuurstra finish a dispersed campsite survey in the Fooses Creek drainage on Aug. 10, 2021.

According to a report from Envision Chaffee County Project & Outreach Coordinator Kim Marquis, volunteers with Chaffee Rec Adopters have done more than 1,700 campsite surveys this summer using a new mobile app that collects the data for recreation growth planning purposes.

Training on the easy-to-use technology and group collection events take place at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 14 in the Clear Creek drainage and on Saturday Sept. 25 for National Public Lands Day.
