In an announcement made Saturday afternoon, May 2, Chaffe County Sheriff John Spezze announced that due to rapidly-increasing fire danger, the county would now prohibit burning along agricultural ditches.

On April 8, Chaffee County went under Stage 2 Fire Restrictions, which prohibit any burns. However,  agricultural ditch burning was still allowed to clear the irrigation ditches, as ranchers and farmers swing into production season.

“Due to the ongoing unseasonably warm weather, strong winds, and continued drying conditions ditch burning will no longer be allowed,” said Spezze in his press announcement. “This will go into effect immediately as the long-range forecast shows warm windy conditions will persist.”
