The Colorado Mountain College (CMC) Board of Trustees met March 8 at CMC Vail Valley at Edwards for its regularly scheduled March meeting.

During the meeting, the board voted unanimously to oppose proposed collective bargaining legislation targeting higher education and local governments. Among other things, the legislation, as proposed, would strip governing boards of their long-standing responsibilities to recognize collective bargaining units on their campuses.

“Current law authorizes governing boards to recognize unions, and we have no objections to those long-standing rules,” said CMC Board President Peg Portscheller. “This bill creates a significant and unfunded burden on colleges and effectively eliminates one of the primary roles of elected officials in the management of public institutions.”

Also at the meeting, CMC Director of Facilities Sean Nesbitt gave a progress update on two of CMC’s three nursing simulation labs. Following the Steamboat Springs campus’s lab opening last August, the lab at Spring Valley is now being framed. Construction is on track for completion and the new space is scheduled to be available for student use by August 2022. The Breckenridge campus lab’s groundbreaking is anticipated for this May, with a completion date of June 2023.

In other business, the CMC Trustees also:

  • Approved five sabbaticals in spring 2023 for faculty members. Erin Beaver will study the viability of a nature-based contemplative writing course at CMC; Joseph Gamble will explore the creation of an associate degree in film and video; Bob Gumbrecht will develop a pilot program of history courses that include diversity, equity and inclusion principles; Leslie Gumbrecht will research mental health issues and the college experience; and Barbara Jackman will explore ways to increase enrollment in and completion of early childhood education degrees.
  • Approved, on third reading, a Breckenridge license agreement with Public Service of Colorado (an Xcel Energy Company) Agreement
  • Approved an auditor engagement letter and charge
  • Approved a new need-based scholarship program, which will begin in fall 2022.
