Whether we want it to or not, COVID continues to impact our daily lives and government processes. Colorado courts continue to postpone jury trials as COVID-19 infections — overwhelmingly the Omicron variant —  surge across the state and the nation reaches unheard-of levels of infections.

At least half a dozen of the state’s 22 judicial districts have temporarily halted jury trials, owing to the highly contagious Omicron variant and the resulting explosion of COVID-19 infections in Colorado.

Orders suspending jury trials or grand jury sessions have been posted since mid-October on 25 district court websites, while an additional dozen courts have continued suspensions that were already in effect. Colorado suspended all jury and in-person bench trials, as well as all grand jury sessions, until at least the end of this week, Jan. 8. What might happen after that point in time may depend upon what the virus does. The Courts, just as many city and county governments are doing, appear to be going week-by-week at this point, due to the volatile virus infection rates.

Similar actions were taken in March, 202o, during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
