The dam appears to be breaking: national-level retailers are now stepping up in droves to mandate face coverings in their stores. This morning, CVS Pharmacies and Target stores have joined other major retailers in announcing that they will require the wearing of facemasks in their stores.

CVS Health is mandating face coverings within their stores as of July 20.

“With the recent spike in COVID-19 infections, we’re joining others in taking the next step and requiring all customers to wear face coverings when entering any of our stores throughout the country effective Monday, July 20,” said CVS Health COO Jon Roberts said. “To be clear, we’re not asking our store employees to play the role of enforcer. What we are asking is that customers help protect themselves and those around them by listening to the experts and heeding the call to wear a face covering.”

Minneapolis-based Target stores will implement their face covering mandate as of Aug 1, excluding “those with underlying medical conditions and young children.”

For shoppers who do not have masks, Target says its stores will provide disposable masks at store entrances. At the same time, Target announced that the Target teacher discount of 15 percent on purchases is proceeding, and this year it will include home school teachers.

In early April both Target and CVS announced major social distancing changes to their store design to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus known as COVID-19.  They have been requiring their employees to wear facemasks. and have used signage to highlight mask use in stores governed by state or local mask mandates.

Earlier store facemask mandates announced by national retailers, including Walmart, Costco, and Kroger Stores, are covered here.
