Saguache County’s Deputy Emergency Manager, David Frees, has been awarded the “Mike Gelski Award for Outstanding Volunteer Achievement” by the Colorado Emergency Management Association.

In 2021, David Frees logged over 600 hours of volunteer service to Saguache County and neighboring communities.
Frees joined the Villa Grove/Bonanza Volunteer Fire Department in 2009 and serves as their Captain and Lead Training Officer. Frees has been a Team Leader and Technical Rope Rescue Technician with the Saguache County Search and Rescue Team since 2015.
He has also been an Emergency Medical Technician, with the Northern Saguache County Volunteer Ambulance District, since 2016.
Frees also serves as President of the San Luis Creek Board of Managers, Subdistrict #4, of the Rio Grande Water Conservation District.
