With conditions rapidly shifting, pre-evacuation information has been provided to the Ark Valley Voice, regarding large animals for both Chaffee and Fremont county residents.

Anyone needing to move livestock or other large animals away from evacuated areas in Chaffee County, contact Kurt Jones, the Chaffee County extension director, at 719-539-6447. Since the Chaffee County Fairgrounds are currently filled with firefighting operations and staging, animals should NOT be brought there.

Also, if you have paddock space or shelter available for other large animals, Kurt Jones will be the clearinghouse to put people in touch. Leave a message at 719-539-6447 as to your needs or offers to help accommodate.

For large animal owners in Fremont County, Jones said, “please first contact the Fremont County Sheriff ‘s Office at 719-276-5555; they will be the clearinghouse for Fremont. Those animals will likely be going to the Canon City area.”  He added, “if you are unable to reach the Sheriff’s Office, you may also call my office above, and I’ll assist.”
