This past weekend, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)  and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) issued a joint bulletin warning that “The FBI and DHS have observed an increase in violent threats posted on social media against federal officials and facilities. The threats include a threat to place a so-called dirty bomb in front of FBI Headquarters and issuing general calls for ‘civil war’ and ‘armed rebellion,” read the bulletin.

But instead of a threat coming from foreign terrorists, this warning comes amid increased domestic terrorist threats to law enforcement and government officials by Trump supporters. They come after the FBI executed a warrant at former President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, for confidential materials, including top secret documents, that by U.S. law are not to be removed from federal possession.

According to DHS communications, the threats are “occurring primarily online and across multiple platforms, including social media sites, web forums, video sharing platforms, and image boards.” The threats began to multiply almost immediately after the FBI’s authorized seizure of 11 sets of classified documents from the former president’s home (according to the unsealed search warrant.)

To be clear, the records belong to the American public and by law (both the Presidential Records Act and the Federal Records Act) they are to be housed in federal storage facilities managed by the National Archives.

“The FBI and DHS would like to ensure that law enforcement, court, and government personnel are aware of the range of threats and criminal and violent incidents,” the memo read. This includes threats that are “specific in identifying proposed targets, tactics, or weaponry,” including law enforcement, judges, and government officials. It also notes the attempted attack on the  FBI building in Ohio on Thursday.

What the DHS document does not say, has now been reported on several Twitter feeds. That Congressional Representative Liz Chaney, (R – Wyoming), who is Vice-Chair of the Jan. 6 Committee investigating the insurrection that took place at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2022, and who is up for re-election in the Nov. General Election, cannot even campaign in person in her home state due to threats against her life.

Cheney, who has stood up to Trump, was one of ten Republicans brave enough to vote for the impeachment of Trump following the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, instigated by the former president. She is running significantly behind in the polls but has gone on record that the preservation of American democracy is more important than her political position.

This is America, folks.

The truth is this: an increasingly violent subset of this country has decided that democracy and the Rule of Law doesn’t matter to them, nor does truth.

For them, it appears that only loyalty to Trump matters. Which is the definition of a cult. And truth? It appears that for them truth is what Trump tells them it is.
