Mt. Princeton will host what is being called a “Second HS 5th Quarter event after the final Buena Vista home football game” on Oct. 25, bringing teenagers to the upper pool on Friday evening, from 9 to 11 p.m. The cost – only $3 per student.

The event is the result of a recent effort of Buena Vista High School, Family & Youth Initiatives and BV Young Life to provide a fun, free or lost-cost, substance-free student-led events for all local high school students with support from trusted adults.

This planned event will bring Buena Vista high-schoolers to Mt. Princeton Hot Springs that evening via a school bus leaving from BVHS after the football game ends, around 9:30 p.m.

The bus is for students who need a ride to the hot springs, and others of age are free to drive. The bus will leave the hot springs around 11:15 p.m. to bring students back to BVHS after the event.

Buena Vista students have been seeking donations around town for raffle prizes to offer at all upcoming 5th Quarter events. The organizer’s goal is to host at least five events during the 2019-20 school year after various home sporting events.

The first 5th Quarter was a success after the Sept. 27 home game, about 55 students led a kickball tournament on the BVHS football field. These events provide an excellent opportunity to capture a large and diverse youth population and to help alleviate barriers they may face to participate in other pro-social activities, including transportation and money.

Among the findings of studies completed during the past several months through the Communities that Care program and the Chaffee County Youth Alliance (CCYA) is the reality that Chaffee County teens need more positive outlets. According to the 2017 Healthy Kids Colorado Survey data, local high school rates of youth substance use, as well as suicidal thinking and action, are higher than regional and state averages.

THE CCYA is looking for more community partnerships for youth-serving organizations, especially to encourage student engagement, to provide a positive alternative for youth.

Raffle donations for current and future events have already been received from City Market, The Roastery, House Rock Kitchen, Black Burro Bikes, Boneshaker Cycles, the Eddyline, Sorelle Delicatessen, Subway, and Pete and Marty Gabriel. Organizations considering making donations can do so with a monetary donation made out to BVHS with “5th Quarter” in the memo line, or make donations for raffle prizes, gift cards for students to purchase food for events.

Entities interested in sponsor a future 5th Quarter event through providing food or other goods are also welcome. Those wanting more information contact Liz Sielatycki at 719-395-0344, ext. 1007 or Lucas Adams at 970-845-0697.
