Volunteers began arriving at the Salida Community Center around 4 a.m. on Friday June 14 to start the preparation for the the FIBArk Pancake Breakfast. The 7 a.m. breakfast, on the corner of F Street and 1 Street, on the first full day of FIBArk activities is a long-standing community tradition. Close to 35 volunteers are needed to prepare and serve the breakfast.

The event offered a wide variety of options: chocolate chip pancakes, eggs, sausage and many healthy alternatives were offered, alongside coffee and juice donations from across the community. A deluxe topping station had whip cream for the kids and the adults who took a chance on being kids themselves.

Elaine Allemang, director for the Community Center, was excited to be running the event, the first time that the Community Center has been in charge of the event. She said she was very grateful to the Salida Rotary, for the purchase of new Black Stone Grills for this occasion, and future events. Allemang said she was honored to feed some of the locals and said she wanted to “get them fed so they can get to work for the weekend.”

Chocolate chip pancakes were a hit with the kids at the FIBArk Pancake Breakfast Friday morning, put on by the Salida Community Center.

Wayne “Wano” Urbonas, Environmental Health Specialist/Manager (Flap Jack), Amelie (Wally Waffle) and Nieve (Short Stack) were walking around in breakfast attire, as was the KHEN Chicken (attired in his ‘normal’ streetwear). Hippie Radio 97.5 was playing music live from the booth. Later in the morning, a coffee sack race took place.

Paul Smith, president for the Community Center Board, was there collecting compost and spoke about the Community Center’s efforts in food distribution and the need for volunteers. The volunteers said they were ‘ecstatic with the turn out’ and at one point, they needed to find more tables and chairs.
