Chaffee County Public Health (CCPH) is encouraging all Chaffee County Residents to test their homes for elevated Radon gas levels this coming week between Feb. 23 and Feb. 26. Free Radon test kits are available at three locations across the county.

Those in Salida can pick their test kits up from the Chaffee County Public Health office in Salida, located at 448 E. 1st. St. Suite 137. Those who live closer to Buena Vista can fpick up free test kits at the Environmental Health office, 112 Linderman Ave. For rural Chaffee County, the Colorado State University extension office located at the Chaffee County Fairgrounds also has free test-kits available.

Radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer. With the winter season winding down, CCPH says that now is the time to complete free testing. The winter months are considered the best time for testing because closed doors and windows improve the test-kit accuracy in detecting Radon levels.

Each kit comes with set-up instructions. The 72 hour test will start at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, February 23. The test will last for three days, until 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 26. After the full 72 hours have passed, the test kits can be sealed and placed in the mail back to CCPH.

Any questions or concerns can be directed to Environmental Health Manager Wano Urbonas at 719-207-1498.
