In 2018, Ken Konopka spent six and a half months hiking almost 1,700 miles of the Appalachian Trail, exploring its vast natural beauty and unique cultural heritage. Konopka will share a travelogue of his journey to date and his return in early May 2019 to hike the remaining 500 miles.

At 2,200 miles, the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, generally known as the Appalachian Trail (or simply the A.T.) is the longest hiking-only trail in the world. The trail extends from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine. More than 2 million people hike parts of the trail each year. Most of the trail is in forest or wildlands, although some portions traverse towns, roads and farms. It passes through 14 states: George, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

The cost for the program is $3 for GARNA members and $6 for non-members. All fees support important stewardship initiatives in the Upper Arkansas Valley. Program registration is available at www.garna.org/calendar/hiking-the-appalachian-trail.

Those needing special assistance should call the GARNA office a few days in advance so accommodations can be made. Contact the GARNA office at 719-539-5106 Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. To 4 p.m. or email info@garna.org.
