Call it a welcome move for at least a few activities returning to normal. The Greater Arkansas River Nature Association (GARNA), Colorado Mountain College (CMC), Salida Mountain Sports, and the City of Salida will host a beginning backpacking course in Salida at Riverside Park.

The event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on September 12. The day will start off with a 45-minute back to back session covering the basics.  This course is offered free of charge and open to the public.

The course will cover a variety of topics including:

  • What to pack
  • How to pack it
  • What to consider when planning a trip
  • Food options
  • How many calories to bring
  • Backpacking with kids
  • Water filtration
  • Backpacking with dogs
  • Leave-no-trace practices and more

Participants may also choose from 30-minute breakout sessions on more detailed topics. Those who wish to participate can come for any portion of the day or stay for the whole course. All levels are welcome.

According to GARNA, the goal is to introduce participants to backpacking and have them leave with a sense of confidence to backpack on their own plus gain new resources to keep honing their skills. This course will not get into technical topics, it is aimed at novice and beginner backpackers.

All attendees will be required to follow COVID-19 regulations including wearing a mask, maintaining social distancing, and overall respect for other’s personal comfort. The course will be outdoor for the entirety of the day. Attendees are asked to bring their own supplies for the day such as a chair, notepaper, lunch, and water.
