The Greater Arkansas River Nature Association (GARNA) is inviting the public to its yearly Nurturing Nature Gala at The Barn at Sunset Ranch, located at 27650 CR 337, Buena Vista.

The event, which is slated for July 7, will feature renowned speaker, author and podcaster, Florence Williams, an award ceremony for GARNA’s first-ever annual GARNA Lifetime Achievement Award, and a “not-so-silent” auction.

Williams, author of The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier, and More Creative is a contributing editor of Outside Magazine and freelances for the New York Times, New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, the New York Review of Books, among other publications.

William’s podcasts include two Gracie-Award-winning Audible Original Series, Breasts Unbound and the Three-Day Effect, and Outside Magazine’s Double-X Factor podcast.

William’s public speaking highlights include keynotes at Google, the Smithsonian, the Seattle Zoo and numerous other corporate, academic and nonprofit venues.

GARNA’s first-ever annual GARNA Lifetime Achievement Award will be awarded to Alan Robinson. Robinson is a 23-year volunteer for GARNA’s Friends of Fourmile chapter, who has worked in numerous capacities to protect and preserve Chaffee County’s natural areas. Robinson’s work includes efforts to implement a visitor use and impact monitoring system in the Fourmile area near Buena Vista. This was critical to starting the Envision Chaffee County Recreation in Balance initiative and GARNA’s education and outreach campaign focused on responsible outdoor recreating.

The silent (and not-so-silent) auction will include items from various Arkansas Valley businesses; including an electric bicycle with a 15 percent-off voucher for any purchase at Boneshaker Cycles. There will also be vouchers auctioned off for vacation stays in unique local venues. Other items include outdoor gear, art, and more.

Chaffee County Commissioner Keith Baker will serve as the not-so-silent auctioneer. Ed Lambert will provide live music, and drinks and hors d’ oeuvres are included with the VIP and Main Event tickets.

VIP tickets include a cocktail hour and book signing with Florence Williams.

GARNA, through its new Sustainability Program, Chaffee Green, is striving to make the event zero waste. In addition to many behind the scenes processes set in place to ensure low or zero waste, each guest will be gifted a pint glass to use during the event and take home afterward.

Chaffee Shuttle will be providing a shuttle from Salida to the event and back for guests who live in the south part of the county. GARNA is encouraging Salida registrants to “be green” and safe and use the shuttle.
