In another sign that Chaffee County and Salida are on the radar of Colorado’s elected leadership, Gov. Jared Polis will travel to Salida on Monday, June 3 to sign three bills into law, passed during the latest Colorado Legislative session. The signing, to which the public is invited, is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. at the SteamPlant Plaza, located at 220 Sackett in Salida.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis signed HB 19-1262 into law on May 21, while to his left, District 60 Representative Jim Wilson waves in triumph. Wilson sponsored the bill in the Colorado House.

The governor will be joined by Colorado District 60 Representative Jim Wilson (Republican). Wilson says two of the three bills to be signed have been identified; a conservation easement bill and a college student loan forgiveness program bill.

“I haven’t heard what the third bill will be,” said Wilson speaking on Friday afternoon. “I can tell you he also wants to highlight the importance of the kindergarten bill that he signed into law last week.

HB 19-1262, the Colorado Full-Day Kindergarten Bill sponsored by Wilson, took years to become law. Its passage means an equalizing of early start educational programming for hundreds of thousands of Colorado youngsters, especially those in rural school districts that had previously been able to fund only half-day programs. The passage was a six-year effort by Wilson, a former school superintendent. Polis signed HB19-1262 into law at the Colorado State Capitol on May 21.
