With school safety top of mind these days, the Colorado Legislature introduced and shepherded two major bills related to school safety through the current legislative session, including a bill that creates a state level “Office of School Safety.”

A third bill, HB23-1143, is directed at increasing the number of peace officers from immigrant communities.

This afternoon Governor Jared Polis is scheduled to sign the three bills into law at the Colorado State Capitol:

  • SB23-241 Creation Of Office Of School Safety – Sponsored by Representatives Shannon Bird and Rod Bockenfeld and Senators Jeff Bridges and Barbara Kirkmeyer.

  • HB23-1143 Federal Authorize Firearms For DACA Peace Officers – allowing certain immigrants to possess firearms to become peace officers. Introduced by Representatives Cathy Kipp, Ryan Armagost, Senators Julie Gonzales and Barbara Kirkmeyer.

  • SB23-070 Mandatory School Resource Officer Training – Sponsored by Representatives Mary Young, Ryan Armagost, Senators Chris Kolker, Barbara Kirkmeyer.
