In a conversation on Friday afternoon, Feb 4, Chaffee County Commissioner Rusty Granzella (Republican) who represents District 3, confirmed to Ark Valley Voice that he has decided not to run for re-election in the Nov. 2022 election. Granzella cited physical health reasons for his decision not to run for a second term.

“I need some time to fully recover my health,” said Granzella, who called his health issues personal and didn’t comment further. He paused and added, “It’s been an honor. And of course, I’d like to be around to see my grandson grow up,” a sentiment that grandparents around the world can understand.

By state statute, Granzella could run for another four-year term. By stepping back from his role on the Board of County Commissioners, Granzella is taking a break from his past several years of public service, including stints as a Salida City Council member, as well as long service on the Salida School Board.

At least two other Republicans ( Dr. Alison Brown and Brandon Becker) have declared their intention to run for the seat Granzella now holds. The Republican primary election is scheduled for June 28.

As yet there is no word on whether the Democrats will field a candidate for the District 3 seat, nor is there any confirmation of whether an unaffiliated candidate may try to petition onto the ballot.
