The kick-off event for the new Chaffee County comprehensive plan is coming up from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 26 at the Mt.Princeton Hot Springs Pavilion. This “Together Chaffee” event is the first of many public open house events that will occur over the next 18 months as the plan is developed.

The event is the beginning of what is expected to be an 18-month long process that is highly dependent upon residents speaking up and providing their input about their vision for the county as relates to the land use policies that will result from the new comprehensive plan. This is not a trivial request, nor is it a topic that concerns only a few organizations. It involves every person living and working in Chaffee County. At stake is what Chaffe County will become in five years, ten years, or twenty years from now.

“We want feedback on the initial direction and goals for the plan,” said CTA Planner David Dixon, who will be the local lead for CTA Architects and Engineers, the consultant contracted by Chaffee County to develop the plan. “This is a public process and we want people representing the array of communities, businesses, and interests to weigh in.”

The plan process will involve residents, local leaders and stakeholders in a broad discussion about what ‘we the people’ want Chaffee to be. That ‘discussion will include no less than 18 public meetings, in a county-wide conversation about jobs, housing, open spaces, agricultural lifestyles, natural resources and the recreational economy. The consultants have pointed out that they need a broad representation of the county to assure that the plan for the future that results represents the entire county, not just segments of it.

The event will include light refreshments and a space for children’s activities, to encourage young families to attend. Chafee County Shuttle is providing transportation for those needing it. Go to www.chaffeecounty.org for more information.
