The 2020 Kent Haruf Memorial Writing Scholarship is open to junior and senior high school students living in Chaffee and Fremont Counties in Colorado. The 2020 Kent Haruf Memorial Writing Scholarship will be awarded for excellence in fiction and creative non-fiction writing.

Students must be previously unpublished writers to participate. Writers may apply in one of four areas: Short Story, Novel Excerpt/Novella, Creative Nonfiction, and Playwriting.

The scholarship honors the memory of the late Kent Haruf and is sponsored by his wife Cathy Haruf and the Salida Council for the Arts. Kent Haruf was a Salida resident and best-selling author of The Tie That Binds, Where You Once Belonged, Plainsong, Eventide, Benediction, and Our Souls at Night, which was produced as a movie.

Entries and registration for this scholarship must be received by March 1, 2020. The shortlist of finalists will be announced on March 20, 2020.

Finalists and parents will be honored at an awards banquet on Sunday, April 26. The winners will receive a cash prize presented by Cathy Haruf. The finalists will also participate in a writing workshop prior to the banquet, taught by a professional author.
