In an event recognizing local ‘Women Who Rock,’ KHEN Community Radio will host an event from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 11 at A Church, located at 419 D St. in Salida.

“This is a sort of Mother’s Day event, honoring some of the special women of our community,” said KHEN Board Chair Leslie Matthews.

Chaffee County residents are invited to attend to honor the women nominated by their fellow citizens for their work in the community. From the 45 nominations received, five women have been selected for special recognition, including Jane Whitmer, Bonnie McDonald, Kate McClelland, Jo Boatright and Tina Gramann. All 45 nominees will be introduced between 5 and 6 p.m. and will receive recognition gifts.

The radio station said it was so impressed by the caliber of nominees, that it added three more categories to the KHEN award honor role. The categories now include: ‘Women who Rock the Spirit’ (honoring Mary Ann Longwell and Denise Akert); ‘Women Who are the Bedrock of the Community’ (Andra Dolton and Felicia Herrmasillo); ‘Women Who Rock the Biz’ (Kat McQuillan and Sara Gartzman); and ‘Women Who Rock and Roll,’ (Amber Cano and Shawn Waggoner).

The evening of fun and festivities will have a $10 cover charge at the door. Children younger than 12 will be admitted free. Babysitting will be provided for young parents, who will assist the children in crafts while their parents enjoy the event. All nominees will receive free admission.

In addition to arts projects, live music and DJ music for dancing, the Women Who Rock Story Corps will be there to document the stories related to the honoree’s work in the community.

Wood’s High Mountain Distillery has created a special cocktail for the event. Elevations is contributing beer and several local restaurants are contributing food including Moonlight Pizza and Sweetie’s Sandwich Shop.
