The November 7 election of several board positions on the Buena Vista Board of Education is fast approaching. This year with curriculum, cultural, and financial pressures in public view, the upcoming League of Women Voters of Chaffee County’s (LWVCC) candidate event has been developed to shed light on where the candidates stand on the issues.

The LWVCC Candidate Forum is set for 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, October 15 in the Pinon Room of the Buena Vista Community Center.

The event will feature the eight candidates running for the five open seats on the board:

District 1, incumbent Brett Mitchell and challenger John Casey Martin;

District 3, Norman Nyberg;

District 4, George Richardson;

At Large four years: Mallory Brooks and Montana Brown;

At Large two years: Paula Dylan and Trinda Windle.

The LWVCC is running a modified format of their normal structure for this year’s School Board Candidate Forum. While it will include introductory statements from each candidate and the traditional “candi-dating” format, it will also include a lightning round of questions by local media, in addition to audience questions from both in-person and Zoom audiences, and a closing followed by a “Meet & Greet”.

During the media lightning round, each candidate will be asked the same set of questions; rotating who goes first with each question.  Ark Valley Voice is participating in the rounds of media lighting questions.

It should be noted that school board elections are supposed to be nonpartisan. No political party stances can be raised by candidates.

The LWVCC does plan to video of the candidate’s statements and lightning-round questions and answers will be recorded and available to be viewed later at LWVChaffeeCounty.org.
