Dear Editor:

Sheriff Spezze concludes HB19-1177 “…clearly violates their constitutional rights…” and “…we have no right to carry out this law…” He urges our county commissioners to consider becoming a sanctuary county with respect to the bill.

I do not question the sheriff’s knowledge of the state and federal constitutions, our laws, their enforcement, nor his diligent research. But his conclusion raises the serious question – are we a nation of laws or individuals? Can we each arrive at our own conclusions as to which laws are constitutional, which are not, and therefore, which we choose to obey?

The same constitution on which Spezze has based his conclusions places that responsibility in the hands of our state and federal Judicial branches, not in the hands of each citizen. To do otherwise is a prescription for lawlessness.
