Dear Editor:

Chaffee County voters have a stark contrast on the ballot for the U.S. House of Representatives. On one side, we have the oh-so-pious, oh-so-patriotic Doug Lamborn who has been a “steadfast supporter” of Donald Trump (his words) regardless of Trump’s bragging about groping women, his payments to silence porn stars, his daily attacks on American democratic values and institutions (including the Justice Department), and his siding with Vladimir Putin against clear and unequivocal evidence provided by U.S. intelligence agencies regarding Russia’s attempts to influence the 2016 election.

This is the same Doug Lamborn whose district contains millions of acres of public land of incalculable value to our economy and way of life but who could not bring himself to support designation of Browns Canyon National Monument despite strong support among his constituents in Chaffee County. Instead, Lamborn acts as a lapdog to the coal industry and other polluters, enthusiastically voting to roll back environmental protections on our lands and rivers.

His disdain for ordinary people is further illustrated by his efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act (which has benefited half a million Coloradans) and his support for the hugely irresponsible tax cut for the rich that has set the stage for cuts to Social Security and Medicare.

His opponent, Stephany Rose Spaulding, offers a refreshing alternative. She is genuine, she is caring, she is one of us. She will be a strong and effective voice for “people over politics” in Congress, and I am proud to support her.
