A Chaffee County hiking and biking trail will soon get an improvement; a structural shade to be built over the Lewis Family bench, designating the resting spot to be known as “Mimi’s Corner”.

The project was proposed last November, for an unused and weed-filled corner along a trail created by Salida-area Parks, Open-space & Trails (SPOT) at the corner of CR 144 and CR 160. The original project was to be created by an Eagle Scout candidate, Luke Johnson. Since he is headed off to college, the project will be taken on by Eagle Scout candidate Jackson Karls.

Karls plans to involve his fellow Troop 60 Scout members in the project, which will include not just the shade covering, but fence the park on two sides, moving in some boulders and plant drought-tolerant native grasses.

SPOT volunteers have agreed to maintain the pocket park. According to SPOT President Donna Rhoads, they anticipate that the project will be completed somewhere around July 23-26.

A Chaffee County budget allocation toward the pocket park project was approved by Chaffee County Commissioners during their June 16 regular meeting; SPOT had asked for $1,500 toward the total cost of the roughly $2,000 project cost and submitted a grant request to the Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) for the remainder of the project materials expense.
